Gulf Diving

During the warmer months, we take refuge from the ranch on the Gulf of Mexico and the freshwater spring fed rivers that flow into it.  While most fisherman spend their time on the water, we prefer to be in and under it.

It is true that Florida's East coast and the Keys offer some of the most attractive domestic Scuba Diving locations.  However, the Gulf Coast is a favorite among spearfishermen.  Hogfish, Grouper, Flounder, Sheepshead, and even Cobia can be found on the artificial reefs and natural ledges in as little as 30 feet of water.

July 1st marks the start of Bay Scallop season from Hernando County north.  This fun activity has become a family favorite.  All that is required is snorkel gear, and a net bag.  The scallops are easy to catch by hand in ten feet of water or less, and provide a tasty treat.  Even the youngest child can be a successful scalloper!

We also try to visit Marathon, in the Florida Keys, every so often for the Spiny Lobster sportsmen season opener.
